The Counterparts Crew

This month's review is another Beatrock Music release.

The Counterparts Crew is an all star West Coast cast that consists of emcees: Braelen B, T-Know, and Otayo Dubb and producers/DJ: Gamma Ray and Fatgums. Prior to my review of the album I was familiarwith the works of T-Know, Gamma Ray and Fatgums. With that in mind, I was pretty sure that The Counterpart's self titled release would be nothing short of outstanding.

The Counterparts commence launch of the album with "Blast Off", a smooth introduction instrumental that plays perfect as the calm before storm. Rightly fitting for this head knocking boom bap album. The CC crew immediately follow with "#1 Crew", their introduction to the world. Hard production and scratching provided by Gammagums, while the three emcees flex braggadocio rhymes on why we shouldn't fuck with them. Definitely not the "same mundane shit" and nice on the speakers. "To The Top" follows and I love this song for the hook alone. Excellent use of the Counsious Daughter's femcee vocals. Each emcee talks about their journey and quest for the top. The hook invites you to join them as they conquer obstacles to become one of hip hop's top crews. Braelen B nails the coffin with his response to underground or maintsream preference...."I'm down with getting paid for radio play, as longs as I can look at myself at the end of the day!". I've seen a lot emcees who love talk about how they would refuse to break mainstream if the opportunity ever arose. If the music's good and your digging with what your writing and with what's released...why not get paid for it? I'm with you all the way man.

The next track, "What We Do" is their track about their sacrifices and love for what they do. Sacrifices of missing parties, family functions, weekends, and everyday life for the art of music making in a 102 degree booth. The fruits of your labor and the endless driving from Los Angeles to the Bay have definitely paid off...besides, the late night sessions have to be worth it just for the Hennessy and Chicken Adobo?!"Home In The Bay" features guest emcee, Tahaj the 1st and on this track they address thier dedication and love for the Bay.... all things Bay mentioned on this track....SF Giants, Oakland A's, earthquakes, Vietnamese Pho, you name it....I "hella" like this track ;) This track is followed by"Guns Of Cali", a track that features Bambu and Kiwi of the Native Guns. T-Know murders the track with his verse. I had to play this guys verse a couple times because it was so dope....let this cat educate you about the the stuggle. My favorite line, "..Besides, my pledge of allegiance is for civil disobedience".

The beat on "Picture This" is killer....the song is a great story about their appreciation for the simple things in life. The flows are hypnotizing. Each emcees asks for you take a second to look around and soak everythingin. Don't let good things pass you by. Great concept and great hook. My favorite track on the album thus far. "Universe", a track that features emcee, Revision discusses how each experience that you live carries a lesson...just look, you'll find it. Another great concept and another killer beat by Gamma Gums. Definitely another favorite of mine. "Trading Places" discusses thier viewpoints and opinions about the media and the stories that they tell. "Re:Act" is an excellent track about sieizing the moment. They tell you that nothing will happen if you don't make it happen...brilliant message by these go getters. The track also features a nice scratch break by Gamma. Gavin Grant features on the next track entitled, "The Message". Verse 1 on this song is bananas and sets the entire mood. Beautiful beat to compliment their story about crafting the perfect verse for each song that they write.

"So Much Love", talks about their appreciation for the love shown by their fans. Not a worry about what the crowd will say, the results, and success as long as they put heart in everything they do. Not a bad motto to live by, but these guys will have no problem picking up fans.

"Dreams Deffered Remix" is about the fire that fuels them to do what they do. No matter what they do a piece of them always revisits their love for the music. The fire continues to flicker, which in turn keeps them making great music. "Until", opens with nice female vocals and is followed by set a of emotional verses. T-Know, Braelen,and Otayo take you back to thier upbringing and tell you why they are the way they are. Each emcee spits a heartfelt verse and I can feel the emotion behind all. What a powerful song....these songs could probably make a ganster cry :) The Counterparts Crew conclude the album with "Patnaz". A song dedicated to all their people...near and far. This is their thank you for all the memories and sticking with them through thick and thin. Perfect ending to a great album.

In closing, the Counterparts Crew succeed in delivering a great head knocking boom bap album. I could never lock onto a favorite song or beat, because each time I tried, the next one would be better. Each song is well crafted and I appreciate the intricate work engineered into each song.

The album is full of well placed breaks and cuts by Gamma and Gums. Each detailed tweak of the beat compliment all emcee verses and aid significantly in getting the point of each song across. I would love to get my hands on the "Instumentals" to this album. Great job by Gamma and Gums. Bralen B, T-Know and Otayo Dubb are all powerful emcees and each have no problem in telling their story.

Each emcee brings a different flavor to table, and all three on a track is like putting Voltron together. I didn't see the need for any guest emcees, but all Contributions were great additions to the album. Each verse is carved to perfection and calculated. The songs all succeed in keeping the listener focused and attentive.
The tracklisting was well constructed and I did not find a dull moment in the album. Overall, outstanding album by these west coast all stars. Support these cats by visiting them at: counterpartscrew.com or on the Beatrock Music home page.

Please join us for an evening of films by students of the Center for EthnoCommunications program, highlighting the diverse experiences of people across Los Angeles County. This retrospective screening aims to bring together students, faculty, staff, and community members to share stories that provide a lens into multi-ethnic Los Angeles. EthnoLA: Revisioning Community and Culture features six films that highlight a range of issues, including the struggles of low-income students at Belmont High School; South Asian motel owners, a skateboard crew in Long Beach, Pilipinos in the Los Angeles hip hop scene in the mid-90s, and one of the Bus Riders’ Union’s eldest organizers, Grandma Kim. The event will also include a Q&A with the filmmakers, followed by light refreshments provided by the Hammer Museum.

RasCue aka EBF of Various Blends has been a mentor and role model to both Gammaray and me since we started DJing back in the day. He's actually the first voice you hear on our debut mixtape OHHSSH!!, which was basically the start of both of our careers in music. A couple years ago RasCue was diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Being the creative leader that he is, RasCue organized an organ donor awareness campaign called "Got Kidney?". The CounterParts (T-Know, BraelanB, Otayo Dubb, Gammaray, and I) were privileged enough to be a part of the campaign's first musical series. Please read about Got Kidney? below:

In December 2008, I was diagnosed Chronic Renal Failure(Kidney Disease). In March 2010, I decided to create "Got Kidney?", a foundation to support Organ Donor Awareness and assist Kidney Disease Patients around the country. The focus is to raise awareness amongst the youth and elderly, the affects of a bad diet, alcohol and drug use and the importance of exercise and stress release. Since I am in the music industry and have gotten so much support personally from Artists all over the world, I decided to start the exclusive "Got Kidney?" music series to give back to those making donations. The gift of music is something universal that all people and cultures can come together on, as well as helping someone else.This series will conceptually focus on good music and serious topics: Love, Change, Growth, Survival, Hope, Strength, Peace, Adversity, Inspiration and Life!! All Proceeds go towards myself and my efforts to support Organ Donor Awareness.

BAMBU ...PAPER CUTS... Track List & Notes

My last post was about the super clean packaging of ...paper cuts..., but when it really comes down to it, it's the music that matters, right?! Bambu, the guest emcees, and the producers all come HELLA correct on this! ...paper cuts... is one of those few albums where every single song is stand alone dope. Here's the track list and my 2 cents on each song (sorry if it's a little producer-centric):

1) PAPER THIN w/ Chace Infinite of Self Scientific (produced by Anon, cuts by Fatgums)

- Bambu and Chace Infinite really go in on this, speaking on gentrification and taking back their respective hoods. Anon's beat is super crazy. He must have sampled some type of Eastern European circus record or some shit! Somehow he made it sound super hard tho! I chose to cut up MC Lyte's vocals from her "Paper Thin" to pay homage and because it ended up fitting the theme perfectly.

1.5) THE LOOP (produced by Anon)

- You can really hear Anon's versatility as a producer having "The Loop" juxtaposed with "Paper Thin". The beat makes you feel like you're listening to a Da Beatminerz beat tape in one of those yellow sony walkmen while riding a train thru Bucktown circa 1993. The verse is on some classic Bam shit.

2) SLOW DOWN w/ Prometheus Brown of Blue Scholars (produced by MTK, cuts by Fatgums)

- I am a huge fan of Blue Scholars and the distinct sound they have crafted for themselves, but at the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Geologic/Prometheus Brown flex new styles on "Oof". So, when I first listened to the beat MTK gave Bam (which is an anthemic double-time banger) and then found out that Geo was gonna be on it, I was super juiced to hear how Geo would deliver his verse. Geo straight tears it up in double-time like no one you've heard before. It's totally Geologic-esque, but in a way you've never heard him. I have a feeling this track will go down in history.

3) CORRECTLY DONE w/ Thurzday of U.N.I. (produced by Digital Martyrs, cuts by Fatgums)

- Digital Martyrs provide a true, classic feel-good beat for this one. Bambu and Thurzday's verses each capture the feeling of the beat and I tried my best to have the cuts do the same.

4) RATHER SEEN w/ Malcolm & Martin (produced by Nick James)

- Hella hard - beat, verses, everything. Nick James is a monster.

5) THE QUEEN IS DEAD (produced by Fatgums)

- Bam really made a beautiful song out of this beat. I am honored to have one of my beats on project of this caliber.

6) SONDALO (produced by 6Fingers)

- This is probably my favorite song on the record. 6Fingers is a true talent and has to be one of my favorite producers out today. This track is epic. I can't wait to hear the new shit he makes in his new LA surroundings.

7) OLD MAN RAPS (produced by Digital Martyrs)

- Digital Martyrs really have a knack for bringing out the emotion in their samples. The beat immediately puts you in a state of reflection, providing a perfect backdrop for Bam's narratives on past struggles, challenges, and victories.

8) SMOG CITY'S OWN w/ Diz Gibran (produced by Digital Martyrs)

- A new Los Angeles classic.

Congratulations to Bambu and all the producers on this record. I think we accomplished something special with ...paper cuts....

A Comedic Review of 2009’s Biggest Pop Culture Stories

After many of the countdowns have already occurred, MTV has one more special that doesn’t simply look back. While other shows might make simple remarks about a story, “Hatin’ On ‘09” cuts through them to their core, calling out the world of pop culture in hilarious ways. A 30-minute pop culture comedy clip show with an urban attitude, executive produced by Nick Cannon, features a diverse group of today’s funniest comedians, sharing their outspoken views on 2009’s biggest stories. The comedians, known as haters, will look back on the biggest celebrity gossip, television, movie, music, and web stories of the year, sometimes alone, and sometimes in heated debates. The haters are comprised of comedians seen on the Chapelle Show, The Wire, Human Giant, BET’s Comicview, Best Week Ever, Def Comedy Jam, and their own specials on Comedy Central, including Donnell Rawlings, Red Grant, Michelle Buteau, Eric Andre, Ali Wong, Maronzio Vance, Nore Davis, Tiffany Haddish and Charlemagne the God & Lil Duval."
